The School of Agricultural Sciences began certifying high school agriculture teachers in 1920, one of the first two universities in Texas to do so. More than 100 years later, 17 students are completing the student teaching requirement while daily serving as a “teacher of life first, and a teacher of agriculture second”. About the School of Agricultural Sciences
Ranked among the top U.S. non-Land Grant universities in enrollment and widely recognized for its outstanding academic programs, the SHSU Agricultural Sciences program offers a wide variety of educational centers to allow for experiential learning to complement concepts taught in the classroom. Faculty and staff offices and lecture halls are housed in the newly constructed Fred Pirkle Engineering Technology Center. With three greenhouses, raised garden beds, lab facilities and a state-of-the-art floral design lab, students in plant and soil science classes are always learning both established and new techniques. The Harrell Agricultural Engineering Technology Center is perfectly designed for gaining practical knowledge in metal fabrication, electricity and electronics, hydraulics, alternative energy sources, construction and soil and water conservation. The 1800-acre Gibbs Ranch, located just north of town, serves as a living laboratory for all aspects of animal science, soil fertility and pasture management, and wildlife ecology.
