The choral program at SHSU is hosting the 2nd annual Area Workshop for high school students. SHSU choral and voice faculty as well as guest clinicians from around the state will help students put the finishing touches on their All-State Choir music. The final step to the All-State Choir begins here!
April 4-7, 2013
The SHSU Bill Watrous Jazz Festival is a competitive, educational event. High school and college jazz bands perform every 30 minutes throughout the day and receive critique sheets from each of the nationally known jazz educators and for the educational benefits that result from hearing other groups perform. Awards will be announced and presented during the SHSU Jazz Ensemble closing performances with Bill Watrous and featured guests. This adds an element of excitement to the festivities and recognizes superior individual achievement.
Choir Invitational

Having begun with an inaugural concert in 2010, the annual SHSU Choir Invitational features Houston area high school choirs in a festive concert setting. Students and directors are afforded a wonderful performance opportunity in the newly opened James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center. This year's invited choirs include Cinco Ranch HS, CyFalls HS, and Baytown Sterling HS.

Festival of Strings

The yearly Festival of Strings encompasses four days of string related activities and events including faculty and guest artist recitals, master classes and orchestra concerts. Recent guests have included renowned artists Mike Bloch (cello), Darol Anger (violin), Ferenc Illenyi (violin), and Scott Holhauser (piano). This year we are thrilled to have with us the world renowned violin soloist Dylana Jenson.

Welcome to the 2012 SHSU Marching Band Festival! The festival is held in Bowers Stadium on the Sam Houston State University campus in Huntsville, Texas. Directors may complete the Entry Form through the link below. The method for collecting payments is changing throughout the university, so your entry will be official upon completing the Entry Form. We will contact you about entry fee payment when we have more information.

Music Therapy Awareness Weekend

Music Therapy Awareness Weekend is an annual mini-conference organized by Mu Tau Omega, SHSU's music therapy student organization. The mini-conference includes professional presentations covering a wide variety of topics related to the music therapy profession. All events are free and open to the public.
String Invitational

A yearly event, the String Invitational is a TMEA All-State/All-Region workshop geared toward high school students who are preparing for the Orchestra Division All-State Auditions. The workshop offers sessions for different levels of preparation/ability, which are taught by SHSU music faculty and guest artist/clinicians from the Houston Symphony.
Summer 2012
The School of Music at Sam Houston State University offers a wide variety of summer camps for both middle school and high school music students. The faculty is comprised of outstanding educators from the public schools and the SHSU faculty. The camps provide an inspiring and educational experience in a supervised and safe environment.

The Center for Music Education is committed to sponsoring Continuing Education Sessions for practicing teachers at the secondary level. This summer we are offering four inspiring and informative session, two for Band Directors and two for Choir Directors. These workshops meet the requirements for Continuing Education Credit. Young teachers will develop skills and refine their technique. Veteran teachers will refresh their skills and gain new perspectives on their art. Everyone will be inspired and enriched with musical thought and professional camaraderie.
