Since beginning his classical guitar studies in 1993, Alejando has performed throughout the US and Italy. He holds graduate degrees from the Peabody Conservatory and the University of Texas where he studied with Julian Gray and Adam Holzman, respectively. Alejandro has performed in numerous master classes with the world's greatest players and pedagogues which include David Russell, Manuel Barrueco, Elliot Fisk, Ricardo Cobo, Lukasz Kuropaczewski and many more. Acclaimed duo SoloDuo (Lorenzo Michelli & Matteo Mela) describe Alejandro's playing as "beautiful" and Pepe Romero noted that Alejandro "understands music very well." Dr. Montiel also received further musical instruction from world-renowned musicians, including baritone John Shirley-Quirk, cellist Nina Kotova, and the acclaimed Miró Quartet.

In 2006 and 2007, Alejandro was a finalist in the Texas Guitar Competition & Festival. Also in 2006, his guitar quartet claimed frist prize with "special merit" in the Brownsville Guitar Ensemble Festival and Competition. Besides serving on the faculty of the annual "Classical Minds" Guitar Festival in Houston, Dr. Montiel leads a full time guitar studio at Sam Houston State University. Alejandro also performs as a founding member of the Texas Guitar Quartet.
