Directing Speech Activities
If you want to teach Speech in Texas high schools, then you will need to know how to create exciting lesson plans for public speaking, debate, oral interpretation and communication application classes.
The application of communication theories and principles used in the classroom will be studied. You will develop lesson plans, classroom activities and assessment instruments for communication classes specified by the Texas Education Agency. The course of study includes secondary education teaching methods for a modern speech communication classroom including material development for classroom instruction as well as coaching activities. You will also examine issues impacting the current state of Speech Education in public schools including P-16 initiatives, guidelines for teacher certification and No child left behind. Additionally, teachers regularly face high school students whose first language is not English, the course will discuss methods of instruction designed to assist these students.
By combining subject matter in communication studies, teaching methods and educational psychology, this course is designed to provide you, the future educator, with advanced training necessary to flourish in the Speech Communication classroom. Based in the Texas Essential Skills and Knowledge (TEKS) guidelines and information found in the state adopted textbooks, the class will assemble a teaching portfolio consisting of lesson plans, assessment instruments, classroom activities and homework assignments to be used in during the first year of instruction.
