The mission of SHSU Mentoring Program is to increase the retention of students by providing incoming freshman and transfer students an opportunity to learn from university mentors who serve as coaches, role models, advisors, guides and referral agents.
Mentors create nurturing and personalized university experiences, thus easing the transition from high school to college and assisting in the retention and graduation of college students. This program provides the opportunity for the students to build relationships with a faculty or staff member, increase their network base, and gain valuable life experience. It gives you a chance to become acquainted with someone who is personally interested in your well-being and who can assist you through the complexities of university life.
How do I receive a Mentor?
Receiving a mentor is easy, just download an application from our website or stop by the Dean of Students' Office (LSC 215) to pick one up. We do all the rest! It is important for students to apply during the summer. This will give you the opportunity to be matched before you arrive on campus, making your transition to SHSU run more smoothly. When you complete your application form, pay close attention to the spaces provided for you to tell us about yourself. This information is what we use to pair you with a mentor.
What is expected of students?
Students are expected to meet with the mentor and to initiate some of the contact as well. Students may also contact mentors if they have special questions or problems to discuss. Students will be given the name, phone number, and department e-mail of their mentor.
What about special events?
There will be special events scheduled throughout the year for both mentors and students to interact. Information will be provided to students and mentors.
