History

Sam Houston Normal Institute was established in 1879 to prepare teachers for service across the state of Texas. We proudly claim being the first educator preparation institute west of the Mississippi. Over the years, curriculum expanded, and additional areas of study were added and the name was changed. In 1923, Sam Houston Normal Institute became Sam Houston Teachers College. The college’s educational mission continued to broaden and in 1969 became Sam Houston State University. We like to say the university grew up around the College of Education and that our roots run deep in preparing the best educators in the state of Texas.
