Dr. Harris' research interests are in the geochemistry of clay minerals. He has investigated how changes in soil mineralogy affect chemical reactions of quicklime and cement in Texas. Many soils in Texas exhibit shrinking and swelling, which causes billions of dollars in damage to buildings, utilities and roads. Much of Dr. Harris' research has focused on mitigating these adverse reactions. In addition, Dr. Harris has evaluated the chemical weathering of salt dome cap rock in northeast Texas and has worked in the oil and gas industry. At SHSU Dr. Harris teaches: Physical Geology, Geologic Hazards, Field Methods, Geochemistry, and Petroleum Geology.
