Bio

Dr. Newman joined Sam Houston State University in 2017 as Chair and Professor of the department. Previously, he was Chair and Professor of the Department of Public Health at The University of Southern Mississippi for five years. He has held fulltime faculty positions at New York University, Quinnipiac University (in Connecticut), and Tulane University. He teaches courses in health economics, statistics, and policy. Areas of research and interest include health finance, management, and public health issues.  

Dr. Newman is a former healthcare executive and is a former Partner of a "Big 4" accounting firm where he was responsible for consulting services in strategic planning and marketing. His career positions include serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Parkland Hospital System (a 1,000-bed teaching hospital) in Dallas, and Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of St. Luke’s / Roosevelt Hospital Center (a 1,500-bed teaching facility) in New York City. He is a former Chairman of the Board of the National Association of Public Hospitals.  

Dr. Newman has provided testimony before congressional committees on health issues, authored several articles, and been a frequent speaker and presenter at professional conferences. He was active in volunteering with The Albert Schweitzer Institute for the Humanities and conducted educational seminars in South America, Eastern Europe and Asia. He has served as a reviewer for Academy of Management; Healthcare Financial Management; Journal of Public Budgeting, Accounting, and Financial Management; Journal of Health Administration Education; Southern Medical Journal.

Assigned number one ranking of approximately thirty dissertation proposals from Northeast universities (included Yale, Harvard, Brandeis, Wharton, and others)
