Marcus Hughes, visiting assistant professor of music therapy, joined SHSU as an adjunct instructor of music therapy in the Fall of 2017. Mr. Hughes completed his B.M. in Music Therapy from SHSU in 2013. After practicing clinically for 2 years, he went back and completed his M.M. in Music Therapy from SHSU with a thesis titled “The Use of Touch with Older Adults in Music Therapy Sessions”. In addition to his work as a music therapist, Mr. Hughes is a licensed massage therapist, which he completed his training for in 2014. He has since completed advanced training in massage for individuals with special needs as well as advanced training in neurologic music therapy. As an involved member in his profession, Mr. Hughes currently serves as the advisor to the Southwestern Region of American Music Therapy Association for Students. He also served as a member of the Master’s Level Entry Subcommittee for the American Music Therapy Association from 2013-2018.
Mr. Hughes’ passion lies in working with adolescents and adults with special needs along with older adults in various geriatric settings. He fulfilled his internship at Heart and Harmony Music Therapy, a private practice in Fort Worth, Texas run by Nikki Belshe, MT-BC and David Belshe, MT-BC. While there he spent time working with children, teens, and adults with various special needs, developmental delays, neurologic disorders, and medical conditions through the CLASS Medicaid waiver program. Since graduating, Mr. Hughes has continued working with the CLASS Medicaid program in Houston.
