Overview of Physical and Mental Health Services
Maintaining your physical and mental health is priority as you matriculate through SHSU-COM. It is common for medical students to seek health services and emotional support through the rigors of a medical education. The university has student health services confidential counseling services at the Huntsville campus and The Woodlands Center that are available to all SHSU students. SHSU-COM encourages students to recognize healthcare needs and seek appropriate care. The following is a list of physical and mental health resources in proximity to the SHSU-COM and University Campuses, as well as in the regions for assigned clinical rotations. The university offers a comprehensive health insurance plan for all students, which includes access to 24/7 telehealth services and virtual telemental health services by appointment. This means that students can receive medical and mental health care remotely, at any time of day or night, from the comfort of their own home or dorm room.
We understand that accessing in-person healthcare can be challenging, particularly during busy academic schedules. SHSU Counseling Center
The SHSU Counseling Center provides individual, couples, and group therapy to students who are currently enrolled. Their mission is to provide service within the university environment that contributes to the academic success, personal growth, and positive social contribution of Sam Houston State University students.
Counseling services are available during normal business hours throughout the year except on university designated holidays. They offer services both in-person and by telehealth, using several HIPPA compliant virtual platforms to protect clients’ privacy and confidentiality. Affiliation agreements include the ability for students to be seen at the hospital emergency department in cases of emergency, needle stick or other immediate needs. The student is responsible for any charges incurred.
Students on self-selected elective rotations outside of affiliated facilities, along with SHSU-COM, must plan for their physical and mental health care needs with the University at the rotation site.
