Research Experiences for Undergraduates
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (or REUs) are competitive summer research programs in the United States for undergraduates studying science, engineering, or mathematics. The programs are sponsored by the National Science Foundation, and are hosted in various universities. REUs tend to be specialized in a particular field of science. There are REUs in many scientific fields such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology, biology, psychology, and computer science

Program Objectives
Understanding the significance of early undergraduate research experience in the fast-growing cross-disciplinary fields, the REU Site: Genome Science and Computational Biology (REU-GSCB) at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) focuses on education and research training in Genome Science and Computational Biology. The objectives are to (1) provide students with comprehensive scientific research methodology, (2) train students in the cross-disciplinary methods of Genomics and Bioinformatics, and (3) impart students with collaborative research by interdisciplinary mentors. The projects include diverse topics on analyses of genomes, transcriptomes, proteome, and metabolome, microbiome, gene networks, enzyme structure and function, and phylogenetic analysis. The proposed students' projects emphasize computational analyses on available structural and functional genomics and other biological data. The proposed collaboration between mentors from the Biological Sciences, Computer Science, and other closely-related Departments will help REU students acquire pragmatic knowledge and principles across the broad spectrum of computational methods and bioinformatics tools.
