Apply“Reverse Transfer” allows students to transfer course work from Sam Houston State University back to the college system to complete requirements for the associate degree. The university credit also applies to the baccalaureate degree. There is no loss of university credit in the reverse transfer process. This program is specifically designed to allow students to receive the advantages pursuant to completion of the associate degree when they leave the college prior to degree completion.
Reverse transfer is a process allowing university students to maximize the educational flexibilities provided by state law and educational accrediting agencies. Most associate degrees in Texas are 60 to 62 credit hours of specific course work in length. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) is the primary accrediting agency for colleges and universities in Texas. SACS requires a minimum of ¼ of the hours for the associate degree to be awarded by the college. The remaining hours may be transferred to the awarding college from other colleges or universities. This means you must typically accumulate 15 to 18 academic hours (60 or 62) at the college awarding the associate degree. The remaining hours may be transferred back from SHSU to complete degree requirements and also used to complete SHSU degree requirements.
The state of Texas requires all students to complete a 36 hour “core” of specified classes. An institution may designate an additional 6 hours of specific for a total of 42 core hours. Students completing the core at the college are termed “core complete” and universities are required to accept these courses in the transfer process. Many students leaves the college prior to completing the core. The law provides the student becomes “core complete at the college” upon completing the university core under reverse transfer. Note the university core may contain course not in the college core of not include courses in the college core. It does not matter the cores are not identical. Once the university core has been completed, the student becomes college core complete allowing the college to award the associate degree.
Every student is different and it is dangerous to apply generalizations to individual transfer students. However SHSU has consistently noted students completing 30 or more hours of college work prior to transferring are far more like to graduate at SHSU than those transferring less than 30 hours students transfer 40 or more hours are highly likely to graduate. SHSU has a Transfer Scholarship program for transfer students completing 45 or more hours of college credit prior to enrolling at SHSU as they are especially likely to graduate.
