Bravery is not a passive behavior or an action that just happens it is a choice. Bravery is overcoming fear by making acting courageously to overcoming the obstacles you face and leading others to do the same, according to Webster’s Dictionary.

Throughout our history, brave men and women have changed the world with courageous acts. Some are unforgettable icons; others’ names may never be remembered. They exist across all industries, societies, and at every level of leadership

Sam Houston State University will host the 2015 Leadercast “The Brave Ones” on Friday (May 8), filled with speakers who have demonstrated bravery in some capacity.

Leadercast flierRegistration will begin at 7 a.m., and the first session will begin at 8 a.m. in the James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center.

Leadercast is a live-broadcast leadership conference that builds leaders worth following. The event will include 10 presentations by nationally recognized lecturers, who will speak live from Atlanta on a variety of topics. The lectures will be broadcast to audiences across the country.

This year’s Leadercast will feature speakers such as Nobel Laurete Malala Yousafzai, NFL quarterback Peyton Manning and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, along with many others.

“This has been a great event; in the past four years it has sold out. This is the fifth year that we have been hosting Leadercast, and we expect that this year will sell out as well,” said Kristy Vienne, assistant vice president for Student Services and director of SHSU’s OneCard Services. Vienne has coordinated of the Leadercast since the event first came to SHSU back in 2010.

“Our program is second to none and SHSU has been recognized for the quality of its presentation by Leadercast itself as an outstanding host of the simulcast,” Vienne said.

The event is open not only to SHSU faculty, staff and students, but also to the surrounding community. In the past, representatives from Huntsville Independent School District, Texas Department of Criminal Justice, city officials and Huntsville Memorial Hospital staff have attended Leadercast, according to Vienne.

“This is a great networking event for students as well as leaders in the community,” she said. “I hope that through this experience attendees realize that everybody can be a leader. If those attending take away one idea that can impact them, then it makes all of our efforts worthwhile.”

General admission tickets are available for $50 until March 31, and prices will increase to $65 after that. An allotment of tickets has been purchased for each division in the university, and questions regarding university tickets can be directed to the Bearkat OneCard Office.

Breakfast and lunch are included in the price of the ticket, and continuing education unit credits will be offered for those attending.
