Sam Houston State University’s students and their families are invited to be a part of the tradition of the annual Bearkat Family Weekend scheduled for Sept. 22-24.
Bearkat Family Weekend’s goal is to actively engage the families of SHSU students and give them a glimpse of campus life, all while showing them their students’ home away from home, according to associate dean of parent relations and special programs Chelsea Smith.
“It’s a great time for parents and family to come back and see their students and catch up on what they’ve been doing since they dropped them off for their first day of school,” Smith said.
During the weekend, families also will be able to interact with various campus entities, learn about student organizations, and have the chance to attend multiple sporting events.
On Friday, families can tour campus; access the Recreational Sports Center for free; participate in a pep rally, which will include the football team, spirit team and pep band; and attend the Program Council's Loteria in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom.
Attendees will be able to meet with SHSU’s leadership on Saturday during “Coffee with the Administrators” and attend College Open Houses where they can experience what their student is learning and meet professors. They will also get to see a classic car show and participate in the Bearkat tailgate and football game against Nicholls State at Elliott T. Bowers Stadium.
The weekend will wrap up on Sunday with an interdenominational Christian worship service at the Farrington Pit.
The Bearkat Family Weekend continues to grow each year, with more than 2,400 family members previously attending with students from various classifications, according to Smith.
“It’s a reward for parents to see what they are investing in. They want to come back and see what the university has to offer, they want to see how things are progressing, and they want to make sure things are OK,” Smith said.
Registration will close on Sept. 4.
Those interested can view a list of events and accommodations available on the Bearkat Family Weekend website, and members of the SHSU Parents Association can receive various discounts around Huntsville with their membership card.
Bearkat Family Weekend costs $15 per person, which includes a T-shirt, continental breakfast, lunch, access to the tailgate, and complimentary gifts. Tickets for the football game must be purchased separately here.
