Comedians and actors Nick Cannon and Nicole Byer will help welcome Sam Houston State University students back to campus with a night of laughter as part of the Kat Comedy Showcase on Aug. 21.
The Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum doors will open at 7 p.m. Byer is scheduled to open the show at 8 p.m. and Cannon will headline.
Cannon has entertained audiences across all platforms for nearly 20 years.
As a teenager, he moved to Hollywood to begin his comedic career performing at popular venues including The Improv, The Laugh Factory and The Comedy Store. He then became the youngest staff writer in television history after landing the gig on Nickelodeon’s hit series “All That.”
Cannon’s first feature-film appearance was alongside Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in “Men in Black II.” In 2002, he showcased arguably his most famous role as Devon Miles in the cult classic film “Drumline.”
Other film credits include “Bobby,” “School Dance” and “Chi-Raq.” He has also regularly made guest appearances on hit comedy shows including “30 Rock,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Chappelle’s Show.”
Under his multi-media company, NCredible Entertainment, he produces TV and film projects including MTV’S “Wild’n Out,” NBC’s “Caught On Camera” and Nickelodeon’s “Make It Pop” and “TeenNick Top 10.”
In addition to his entertainment endeavors, Cannon is also a philanthropist and has worked with organizations such as Feeding America, Boys and Girls Club, Toys for Tots, and Stomp Out Bullying. He also published a children’s book titled “Neon Aliens Ate My Homework: And Other Poems.”
Kat Comedy Showcase opener Byer, an Upright Citizens Brigade alum, most recently produced and starred in the MTV comedy series “Loosely Exactly Nicole.” She was also a fan favorite on MTV’s “Girl Code.”
She first gained national attention after co-creating and starring in the Above Average web series “Pursuit of Sexiness.”
Byer previously appeared in “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates,” “Lady Dynamite,” “Party Over Here,” “BoJack Horseman,” and “30 Rock.”
“We chose Nick and Nicole based on twitter polls we ran and the majority of students voted for them,” said Steven Begnaud, assistant director of student activities. “We feel it is imperative we get our students’ voice on who comes to perform here at Sam Houston State University. These shows are for them, and giving them the say in who headlines and supports is important.”
SHSU students, staff and faculty can obtain two free tickets to the show starting on Aug. 14 at the Johnson Coliseum. Attendees must have an active BearkatOne card to receive the tickets.
Additional tickets may become available to the public for $20.
