The Sam Houston Memorial Museum has announced its 2017 Photo Contest. There are no residency requirements to enter the contest and the contest is open to everyone who is a non-professional photographer.

The cash prizes are $100 for Best in Show, $75 for Reserve Grand Champion or $20 for first, $15 for second, and $10 for third place in each of the six categories. Twenty Curator’s Choice awards will also be given.

The categories for submission this year are Floral, Animals, Action, Open Spaces, Personality, and Architecture.

This is the eight year for the Museum to sponsor the photo contest. Casey Roon, exhibits curator, wanted to bring something new to the Museum. With her love of photography, the photo contest was born.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for amateur photographers of all ages to have their work displayed prominently in a gallery setting of an accredited museum,” Roon said. “We extended the original dates after Hurricane Harvey, so if you run across previously published information with earlier dates—never fear, we will be taking your entries until Oct. 29.”

All submitted photos will be on display in the Exhibit Gallery at the Katy & E. Don Walker Sr. Education Center. Winners will be determined by a panel of judges. The Awards and Artists Reception will be held on Nov. 13 from 5-6:30 p.m. where the winners will be announced. The photo contest exhibit will be on display for the public Nov. 14 through Jan. 14, 2018.

The deadline to enter is Oct. 29 by 4:00 p.m.

Cost per entry is $5 and payment method is cash only. Each photo entry must have its own entry form. Photographs must be submitted as full 8”x10,” unmounted, unframed and with no border. No exceptions. Photos will not be accepted that have titles and names printed on the front of the image, and entries must be suitable for family viewing. Photographers may enter as many categories as they like, but no more than two photos per category.

The complete list of contest rules and application forms can be picked up at the Main Museum, Museum Store or Katy & E. Don Walker Sr. Education Center any time during museum hours or downloaded directly from the museum’s website at samhoustonmemorialmuseum.com.
