To help those who wish to become more proficient in English, Sam Houston State University will offer Language and Culture classes in the fall and spring at SHSU—The Woodlands Center.
The classes are designed for non-native speakers seeking to improve their speaking, reading and writing skills in informal special topics courses.

Directed through SHSU’s English Language Institute, the Language and Culture Program for Non-Native Speakers comprises four special topic classes that introduce students to U.S. and Texas culture, the "Immigrant Experience," career exploration, and current events.
Marilia Campos, Brazil-native, attended the spring 2017 courses.
“Our culture is a little different from the American one,” Campos said. “Students feel these differences along their academic life in the U.S. These courses help international students understand not only the differences, but also the reasons behind them. It helped me discover that we are not that different, we are just using different glasses, or cultural values, and this simple understanding helps to adjust.”
The fall session begins on Oct. 23 and runs through Dec. 15. The spring session will start April 1, 2018.
The eight-week stretch will be held 8:15-10:40 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday. F-1 international students can enroll full-time or the classes can be taken individually for students who are not required to maintain a full-time student status.
SHSU—The Woodlands Center is located at 3380 College Park Drive, next to the Lone Star College-Montgomery campus, in The Woodlands.
