For those interested in law school, Saturday, Sept. 22, 2018 could provide an important clue to your future. The LEAP Center is partnering with Princeton Review to offer Sam Houston State University students a free practice LSAT, one given under “test-day conditions.”
“This is a key opportunity,” notes Mike Yawn, director of the Law, Engagement, And Politics Center, and professor of political science. “It’s a chance for pre-law students to get a sense of where they will score on the LSAT, and then plan ahead to achieve the score they want when they are required to take the actual exam.”
Although a student’s GPA is a key factor for admissions to law schools, the LSAT score is typically the most important factor. The practice LSAT offered by the LEAP Center is a real test, one that was offered to students on official test dates in the last five years. However, the students’ attempts will not count as official scores, and no law schools will see the results.
Through efforts such as these, SHSU has moved steadily up “law-school feeder” rankings according to the Law School Admissions Council. Each year, the LSAC compiles a list of the top 240 “law-school feeders” in the country. SHSU first broke into the rankings in 2009, and since that time has moved into the top 110, placing it in the top four percent of four-year degree granting institutions in North America.
The Mock LSAT is one of several services provided to pre-law students at SHSU. The University offers a Legal Studies minor, and each year the LEAP Center brings the 10th Court of Appeals to campus to hear oral arguments; offers a “Mock Law Class” led by South Texas College of Law Professor Val Ricks; facilitates several workshops assisting with the law-school application process; and provides travel opportunities to law schools and law-related events. The LEAP Center also sponsors the “Pre-Law Society,” a student organization that brings in monthly speakers to discuss legal topics and career advice.
To sign up for the mock LSAT or to find out more information about LEAP’s programs, students should contact Professor Mike Yawn at mike.yawn@shsu.edu.
