The Sam Houston Memorial Museum is staying busy throughout the Summer. This year the museum is hosting “Living History Dayz” through the end of August. The family-friendly program is held Tuesdays through Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the museum grounds.

“Each day brings a new theme,” said Derrick Birdsall, curator of education. “We will update our Facebook each week to show what programs we have planned.”

The various themes include: hidden history, frontier skills, foodways, social etiquette and playtime, the natural world and work on the farm. These programs will explore and go through the history of the grounds, and also teach the skills necessary on the Texas frontier.

This year will mark the 155th anniversary of Sam Houston’s death. On July 26-27, the programs will focus on the death of Sam Houston at the Steamboat House and his funeral.

“On those days, the plan is to have the Steamboat House open to the public,” said Birdsall.

In addition to Living History Dayz, guided tours are offered with paid admission Tuesday through Friday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.  with tour check-in is at the Wigwam Neosho Museum Store.  Staff members from the education department lead the tour, providing the history of our historic homes and grounds with the tour ending at the Memorial Museum Rotunda.

On certain Saturdays, there will be period demonstrations on the museum grounds as well. For more information on the museum’s summer events and exhibits, visit samhoustonmemorialmuseum.com or call 936.294.1832.

The Sam Houston Memorial Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4:30 p.m.
