Sam Houston State University’s Department of Theatre and Musical Theatre is bringing the hit musical, “Pippin” to the Erica Starr Theatre April 18-21 with evening performances at 8:00 p.m. and a Saturday matinee performance at 2:00 p.m.
The show features unforgettable music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the composer of “Wicked” and book by Roger O. Hirson, with a tip of the hat to the iconic choreography of Bob Fosse, who directed the original Broadway production.
Written in 1972, “Pippin” is the timeless tale of a young person’s quest for purpose and offers a familiar parallel to students faced with the question of what to do with their future.
“As we all search to understand the meaning of our lives, Pippin embarks on a search that has the ability to destroy him. I believe this musical will resonate with young adults in particular as they set out to explore what the world has in store for them as they graduate from college,” Director Penny Hasekoester said.
Heir to the Frankish throne, the young prince Pippin is in search of meaning and significance. Manipulated on his journey by the charismatic Leading Player and his mysterious troupe of ghostly figures, Pippin is lured and led into the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power as he goes along his way. In the end, Pippin finds that happiness and fulfillment lies not in extraordinary endeavors, but in the average moments of every day.
“Pippin” is directed by Hasekoester and choreographed by Kyle Craig-Bogard with music direction by Laura Avery and Eric Gundersen.
The production is for mature audiences and includes adult themes and language. For ticket information, contact the Box Office at 936.294.2339 or visit www.shsutickets.com to purchase tickets online. General admission tickets are $15 and discounted tickets are priced at $12 for senior citizens or those with a Bearkat One Card.
The Erica Starr Theatre is located in the University Theatre Center at 1740 Bobby K. Marks Drive and 17th street between the Newton Gresham Library and the James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center.
