Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Sam Houston State University School of Nursing professor E’Loria Simon-Campbell, PhD, RN, to the Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke.
The council works with stakeholders to implement the “Texas Plan to Reduce Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke” and promote its mission of the Council; that is, “to educate, inform, and facilitate action among Texans to reduce the human and financial toll of cardiovascular disease and stroke.”
Campbell attended the Texas Team Nurses on Board seminar and found out about the public health position on the council. Their goal is to “improve the health of communities and the nation through the service of nurses on boards and other bodies.”
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke are the number one and number three causes of death in Texas. However, these chronic diseases are largely preventable through the reduction of modifiable risk factors. Prevalence, as well as CVD and stroke-related morbidity and mortality rates, can be reduced by: increased physical activity; good nutrition; tobacco cessation; control of high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and diabetes; and reduction of overweight and obesity.
“I hope to gain insight of current grants, research, and initiatives of the state of Texas”, Campbell said. “In addition, I would like to see what strategies and resources are available to assists Texans with self-management of hypertension and home monitoring programs. Due to the increasing incidence of obesity, any efforts to provide health education/training to either prevent or to empower Texans to take an active role in their health is key to both quality of life and positive health outcomes.”
About the Council on Cardiovascular & Stroke
During the 76th session of the Texas Legislature, lawmakers passed House Bill 2085, which included the creation of the Texas Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke (CVD). Activities of the Council include the following: developing an effective and resource-efficient plan, conducting health education, public awareness, and community outreach, improving access to treatment, coordinating activities among agencies within the state, developing a database of recommendations for treatment and care, and collecting and analyzing information related to CVD.
Pursuant to Chapter 93 of Texas' Health and Safety Code, Texas Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke Council members are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. They serve staggered six-year terms, with the terms of four members expiring February 1 of each odd-numbered year. A nonvoting member representing a state agency serves at the will of the appointing agency.
