Best College ReviewsSam Houston State University was ranked No. 1 out of the top 65 online schools for master’s degrees according to a report by Best College Reviews.

The study was conducted because of recent trends with colleges and universities offering their master’s degree programs via distance education in order to keep up with the growing demand for advanced credentials in the workforce.

Their results are based on an initial pool of more than 65 schools, which was then narrowed by consulting College Navigator, U.S. News & World Report and each school’s website to apply the rating and ranking methodology. Additional factors such as cost of tuition and number of online master’s degrees offered were also considered.

“Sam Houston State University tops U.S. News & World Report’s ranking of online master’s degrees in criminal justice, and it ranks among the best schools for online master’s degree programs in computer information technology and education,” the report cites.

It also credits the university’s large number of degree offerings. SHSU offers 27 online master’s degrees, with specific offerings including, an MS in Criminal Justice Leadership and Management, MA in Higher Education Administration, MS in Victim Services Management, and MA in Communication Studies.

According to Ruth Chisum, executive director of Online Operations for SHSU Online, the university’s faculty are the backbone of all academic success.

“SHSU Online provides ongoing faculty support, including development opportunities in online pedagogy and facilitation,” Chisum said. “We believe it is important to support faculty who teach online because they are the cornerstone of success in the virtual classroom.”
