Events Bearkats Will Love This February

Throughout the month of February organizations across Sam Houston State University are offering plenty of events and activities to get students, faculty and staff into the heart of the season. Mark your calendars or even make it a date.
BBQ Cookoff
Feb. 6, 5:30 p.m.
Bernard G. Coliseum
SHSU Student Activities is hosting a BBQ Cookoff. The cookoff categories include chili, brisket, and ribs. The event is free to all students and faculty with a Bearkat OneCard and open to all organizations, departments and colleges on campus. Competitors have the chance to win cash prizes as well.
Miss Sam Houston
Feb. 7, 6 p.m.
Lowman Student Center Orange Ballroom
During this free event, sixteen contestants will compete for the title of Miss Sam Houston. The winner serves as the representative and spokesperson of SHSU. The young lady who wins will receive an educational award, a meal plan courtesy of Aramark and will represent the university in the 2019 Miss Texas America Pageant.
Love Rocks
Feb. 13, 6 – 8 p.m.
Recreational Sports Center
The Rec Center is hosting a pre-Valentine’s Day rock-climbing event, bring a friend or significant other and enjoy!
$5 a couple and free for pass holders.
Other activities will be available.
Movie Night
Feb. 13, 6 p.m.
Lowman Student Center Theatre
Program Council is showing the Disney animation film, ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet.’
Free popcorn is provided.
Admission is free for all registered students.

Build-A-Bae
Feb. 14, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Lowman Student Center 2nd floor Atrium
SHSU Program Council is honoring Valentine’s Day with an event to create a fluffy friend for the occasion. The free stuffed animals will be available while supplies last. For more information contact Program Council at 936.294.1763 or at PC@shsu.edu
Project Starfish Fundraiser
Feb. 14, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
TEC room 279
Come have cookies and coffee while donating to an important cause. The College of Education’s Project Starfish was started to raise funds for students during Hurricane Harvey relief. Now the focus has shifted to helping students with financial hardships who are looking to pay for certification tests to become teachers.
Backpacking the Lone Star Trail
Feb. 16-17, Overnight
Sam Houston National Forest
The Outdoor Recreation Program is hosting an adventurous overnight backpacking trail onto the longest thru-trail Texas has to offer. Student prices are $35 and for non-student it is $45. Those wanting to participate must register by Feb. 11 at http://shsu.edu/outdoors.
Our Lady of 121st Street
Feb. 20, 7:30 p.m.

University Theatre Center
7:30 p.m. showtime
The Department of Theatre and Musical Theatre presents “Our Lady of 121st Street.” The play by Stephen Adly Guirgis is a dark comedy surrounding the theme of old friends reuniting because of not-so-good circumstances.
Thank A Donor Day
Feb. 20, 10 a.m.
Lowman Student Center Mall Area
The day to show appreciation to the many alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students has arrived. All students are invited to stop by and sign “Thank You” cards or give a nice shout-out to the university’s donors. The first 200 who visit the table will be given freebies for participating.
