Giving Back Through Education
SHSU Media Contact: Emily Binetti
Alumnus Scott McMillan (’05) attributes much of his professional success to he strong work ethic his parents modeled and instilled in him. His loyal Bearkat roots are also thanks to his parents.
Don (’74) grew up on a cotton farm near Mart, Texas, and was the first in his family to attend college. Janet (’75) was a country girl from Prairie Hill, a farm and ranch community in Limestone County. They both left their small rural communities to attend SHSU.
After returning from basic training in 1968, Don and Janet married and embarked on their lives together in Huntsville. Don spent his career in criminal justice with TDC, retiring as director of payroll after 25 years of service. Janet devoted over 30 years as a language arts educator at Mance Park Middle School in Huntsville.
The Don and Janet McMillan Scholarship Endowment was established by Scott in memory of his late father and in honor of his mother, to help future Bearkats on their academic journey.
“Education played an important role in my upbringing thanks to my parents,” Scott said. “Supporting others and giving back through education—I can’t think of a more fitting way to honor them.”
