Sam Houston State University has named Anne Gaillard as the new vice provost for Academic Affairs, effective Jan. 1, 2022.
“We are thrilled to have Dr. Gaillard as a more permanent addition to the Academic Affairs leadership team,” Michael T. Stephenson, provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs, said. “With a strong teaching and research background, she has been a huge asset in the interim role, and I can’t wait to see how she continues to actively support our students and their success.”
Gaillard has acted as interim vice provost for the majority of the past year, starting in December 2020.
“I’ve chosen a career in academia because I want to help students succeed and provide a transformative experience for them,” Gaillard said. “I’ve enjoyed my time as interim vice provost, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue serving our students in this role and to help further the university’s mission.”
In her time as interim vice provost, Gaillard has partnered with the Division of Strategic Enrollment and Innovation to develop cross-divisional work groups tasked with helping address the most pressing needs for student recruitment, enrollment, and sustained academic success. She has also worked to develop and revise academic policies, including an ongoing effort to develop an academic policy on policies to promote shared governance. In addition to other academic initiatives, Gaillard will continue to promote best practices for the recruitment and retention of diverse faculty and staff members.
“I truly value cross-campus collaboration and communication that intentionally invites a variety of voices to the table,” she said. “I hope to continue to work with my faculty and staff colleagues to help build a culture of inclusion and remove barriers to student, faculty, and staff enjoyment and success.”
Gaillard began at SHSU in the Department of Biological Sciences in 2004. She joined as an assistant professor and since has served as graduate coordinator, assistant chair of the department, associate professor, and associate dean of the College of Science and Engineering Technology before signing on as interim vice provost in December 2020.
Gaillard received her PhD in Biochemistry, Cell, and Developmental Biology at Emory University and her bachelor’s of science degree in Genetic Biology at Purdue University.
