The Sam Houston State University Department of Student Activities and the Alumni Association are proud to present a full week of homecoming celebrations in preparation for the Saturday game against Southern Utah University. So, assemble your crew and gather team spirit to help take down SUU on Nov. 19.
Some changes have come to the event, with the parade moving from its usual Thursday to Friday and the addition of a Harvest Festival to follow the parade. The theme of this year’s homecoming is Agent Sammy 0079, a Bearkat twist on a James Bond-esque super spy theme. Parade attendees can expect to see spy-themed floats and secret agents marching down Sam Houston Avenue. Located at the Walker County Annex, the festival will feature food, live music and more homecoming fun for members of the SHSU community. The festival will take the place of SHSU’s usual Sam Jam Carnival event.
“Most carnival companies don’t do carnivals in this area during November,” Brandon Cooper, the director of Student Activities said of the changes. “We still wanted to be able to offer something to the Bearkat community and so we developed the idea and concept of the Harvest Festival to have that autumn atmosphere and a fun, engaging environment for our students, faculty, staff and community members to engage with.”
While homecoming is usually held in October, a shift in the football schedule left no home games during that month, leading SHSU to move the festivities to November. According to Cooper, combining the parade and festival days will help students and community members keep their spirits high and allow them to easily move from one event to the next.
“We really look forward to all of it,” he said. “Homecoming is a great opportunity for our current Bearkats to meet alumni and make a meaningful connection. To us, that’s the most exciting part, that it’s an engaging time for students, all the Bearkat community and beyond.”
