Studying abroad can be tricky due to the language barrier. When Y Luong joined the Sam Houston State University community as an international student from Vietnam, hardships during the pandemic made her experience even more challenging. With support from the campus community, she was able to still pursue her academic and career dreams.

“Faculty and fellow students made SHSU a home away from home for me,” Loung said. “The department of Engineering Technology offered me tremendous opportunities to grow and develop over the years. Thanks to all the extraordinary effort and support, I can now truly unleash my career potential.”

As an Honors College Ambassador, Luong participated in community service projects each semester. She also took part in organizing and helping with on-campus events.

“I enjoyed being a part of several activities that embraced diversity among our campus community,” she said.

In SHSU’s Center of Diversity and Intercultural Affairs, Luong served as a programming director. She was also president of the Virtual Reality Club and a member of the International Student Organization.

Luong’s educational journey at Sam Houston led her to an internship opportunity with Tesla, Inc. where she plans to continue her career after college.

“I am currently an intern at Tesla, Inc. The scope of my work includes safety and ergonomic design. Excitedly, I have also accepted an extension offer from Tesla, to join the XR (Mixed Reality) training team after graduation.”

Luong looks forward to exceling in an engineering design team where she can use her knowledge in contributing to training and significantly making impacts to technology innovation.

“I will miss all my friends and faculty who have been a part of my SHSU life. Each of them made impacts in my life that led me to who and where I am at today.”
