Parker Plaza

Sam Houston State University’s request to rename ‘The Yard’ in front of the Lowman Student Center to the ‘Frank Parker Plaza’ was among the items approved by the Texas State University System Board of Regents at their regular quarterly meeting on May 20 on the SHSU campus.

Frank Parker, vice president for student affairs, previously announced his plans to retire in May 2022 after spending more than 41 years providing leadership and support for generations of SHSU students.

The official renaming honors Parkers’ accomplishments during his years of service to the university.

According to the walk-on motion, the outdoor plaza serves as one of the most visible and prominent places for students to gather, apart from the indoor facilities. It provides a place of conversation for students, faculty, staff and visitors of the university. Parker’s efforts to create a more inclusive, student-engaged university makes the plaza a fitting place to be named after him.

“Names mean something. That is why we want to honor Mr. Parker by naming this plaza after him. Our university is honored to have his name be a part of us forever,” said SHSU President, Alisa White.
