SHSU President Named Chair-Elect Of American Association Of State Colleges And Universities

On Nov. 7, Alisa White, president of Sam Houston State University, attended the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) annual conference in Chicago where she was appointed chair-elect of the organization.
In 2020, White became SHSU’s second female president. She led the university through the COVID-19 pandemic and has seen the university’s programs and events return in force. Under her leadership, SHSU has received $23 million in pledges and gifts in FY23 and a $32 million state investment from the Texas legislature for the College of Osteopathic Medicine. She has also overseen the university’s transition into Conference USA, elevating all SHSU’s athletic programs to a higher competitive landscape.
Throughout her career, White has been dedicated to creating an environment where underserved students can reach their full potential and gain access to equitable experiences inside and outside of the classroom. As a result, SHSU has been recognized for the opportunities it provides first-generation and other traditionally underserved students.
White previously served as president of Austin Peay State University, as well as vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas at Tyler and Midwestern State University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Lee College (now Lee University), a Master of Science in library and information science and PhD in mass communication from the University of Tennessee.
AASCU is a Washington, D.C. based higher education association of 350 public colleges, universities and systems whose members share a learning- and teaching-centered culture, a historic commitment to underserved student populations, and a dedication to research and creativity that advances their regions’ economic progress and cultural development.
White’s term as chair will begin in 2025.
