SHSU Summer Commencement Speaker Announced

Bryan Collier will be the featured guest speaker for Sam Houston State University’s 2023 summer commencement ceremonies taking place on Aug. 5 in the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum in Huntsville, Texas.
With over 38 years of adult correctional experience, Collier became the executive director of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) in 2016. In his current role, he oversees the operations of one of the largest adult criminal justice systems in the country; responsible for the confinement and care of over 128,000 felony inmates, the supervision of roughly 283,000 more inmates on probation or parole and the management of approximately 32,000 employees statewide.
Collier holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminology and Corrections from Sam Houston State University ('86). He is an active member of the Correctional Leaders Association (CLA), the American Correctional Association (ACA), and serves on the Board of the 4th Purpose Foundation.
Collier has been recognized as one of ACA’s “Best in the Business,” received the Dr. George J. Beto Hall of Honor award from the Texas Corrections Association, and was the recipient of the 2022 CLA Michael Francke award.
