Two Sam Houston State University College of Criminal Justice (SHSU CJ) doctoral students have received awards from the American Society of Criminology (ASC). Both students are recognized for their research in the criminal justice field.

Ghady HbeiliniGhady Hbeilini has been awarded the Graduate Fellowship for Global Research from the ASC Division of International Criminology. The award includes a $1,000 prize to support his doctoral dissertation, “Culture, Institutions, and Anomie on Terrorism: Accounting for Global Anomie within the Middle East and North African Region.”

“I was quite happy when I was informed that I was this year’s winner,” Hbeilini said. “It means a lot to me given that I am from Lebanon and would like to employ my research and results to potentially help my home country, the broader region and anywhere else I might be researching to help counter terrorism.”

Kelsey Kramer has been awarded the Dr. Anat Kimchi Memorial Graduate Travel Award from the ASC Division on Corrections and Sentencing. The award is given to doctoral students who plan to present quantitative, data-driven research on topics related to corrections and sentencing, including recidivism and the study of formal institutions of social control.

“When I got the email telling me I won the award, I was incredibly excited,” Kramer said. “I felt a huge sense of accomplishment. This is the first award I have won from the division and hopefully not the last.”

Kramer and Hbeilini received their awards during the 2024 ASC annual meeting in November, which was held in San Francisco. Both say they walked away from the experience encouraged.

“I always feel inspired after ASC, and this year was no different,” Kramer said. “I was able to connect with some old colleagues and establish new connections that I am hopeful will grow into collaborations. I was also able to see several stellar panels that got me thinking about future project ideas.”

“It was great being able to present my research and receive the award,” Hbeilini said. “It was an honor to share my work with a community of esteemed scholars and professionals. The recognition for my efforts has been deeply motivating as I continue to advance and expand my studies in criminal justice and criminology.”
