Daye with Flag.jpegDaye Kim’s journey to SHSU started with a successful career as a crime scene investigator for South Korea’s national police agency. Originally from Seoul, she excelled in her role and sought to expand her understanding of forensic science beyond the field. Her desire to delve deeper into the laboratory side of evidence analysis, as well as the investigative aspects of crime scenes, led her to SHSU’s forensic science program.

“The program here is amazing because it provides everything I want—laboratory skills and the knowledge to deeply understand forensic science,” Kim said. “Now, I can better connect the dots between evidence collection and analysis, which will enhance my professional skills if I return to the field.”

The journey wasn’t without its challenges. Navigating the U.S. university application process while balancing work and studies was no small feat. Once at SHSU, the language barrier posed another obstacle.

“At first, I barely understood what people were saying,” Kim said.

Resources like the Conversation Club helped her improve her English skills and build confidence. She also found the SHSU community to be unexpectedly supportive.

“I expected a more individualistic environment, but the community here is close and friendly,” Kim said.

“The professors here are truly passionate about their research and helping students succeed,” she said. “In Korea, professors were more distant. The faculty here are deeply invested in students’ growth.”

Looking towards her future, Kim envisions a career where she bridges the gap between forensic theory and practical application. Whether as a professor or a trainer, she hopes to combine her academic knowledge with hands-on experience to benefit both students and practitioners.

To those considering SHSU, Kim emphasizes the university’s welcoming atmosphere and resources.

“Sam Houston offers great scholarships and work opportunities, which make studying abroad more manageable, along with invaluable resources from their Global Engagement Center” she said.
