As an international student from Egypt, Sam Houston State University (SHSU) has become more than just a place to study for Raghda Shahat; it has become a second home. Pursuing a doctorate in higher education leadership, she described her journey to SHSU as transformative.
“When I arrived, I fell in love with the campus and the welcoming environment. I knew I wanted to stay and make it my educational home,” she said.
Shahat grew up in Fayum, the largest oasis in Egypt, surrounded by palm trees and farmlands. Her early fascination with the English language and American culture inspired a dream of studying in the United States. That dream came true when she was selected as a Fulbright Scholar to teach Arabic. Initially placed at SHSU, she quickly decided to make the university her permanent academic destination.
“Sam feels like home—a place where you truly belong,” she said. “The professors, staff and community make you feel supported and valued.”
Shahat’s program in higher education leadership has allowed her to explore her passion for working on college campuses and helping students beyond the classroom. She credits her professors with providing exceptional mentorship.
“My academic department is incredible,” she said. “The professors are not just educators, they are mentors. Every class feels like a step forward in your career.”
Shahat’s journey has not been without challenges. Leaving her young daughter in Egypt was a heart-wrenching decision, but her determination to create a better future for her family kept her focused.
“Leaving my daughter was the hardest decision of my life,” she said. “But I’m pursuing this journey to show her that being a woman should never limit what you can achieve.”
Despite cultural adjustments and financial challenges, Shahat found a strong support system at SHSU.
“Adapting to a new culture was challenging, but the resilience I discovered in myself and the support from the SHSU community made it possible,” she said. "The international student community has been like an immediate family, and the rest of the campus feels like an extended family."
Shahat encourages prospective students to consider SHSU for its strong support network and academic programs.
“If you’re considering SHSU, you’ll find a safe, welcoming environment where you can thrive academically and personally,” she said. “The resources, mentorship and support here are top-notch. It truly feels like a home away from home.”
As Shahat continues her doctoral studies, she hopes to empower students and make a difference on college campuses.
