As Sam Houston State University prepares for another year of serving its student veterans at the highest level, the Texans Veterans Commission (TVC) again recognized its efforts with the prestigious Veteran Education Excellence Recognition Award. This distinction honors universities and colleges in the state that provide quality education-related services in an effort to significantly enhance the success of military-connected students.

On Thursday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott congratulated Sam Houston State and the 23 other institutions that received the 2024 distinction.

“Home to over 1.7 million veterans and service members, Texas is proud that colleges and universities across our great state offer world-class resources and educational support to the brave men and women who served in our nation’s military,” Abbott said. “I thank these colleges and universities for their ongoing efforts to provide wide-ranging services for student veterans and their children as they pursue opportunities in higher education.”

It is the third straight year SHSU has received the award, largely due to the array of resources offered through its Veterans Resource Center (VRC). The award was broken into gold, silver and bronze levels, with Sam Houston earning the gold designation.

“This award is a significant milestone that reflects SHSU’s ongoing commitment to our veteran students and the broader military affiliated community,” said VRC Director Fernando Chavez. “In recent years, we have made substantial strides in expanding and enhancing the services we offer, from academic support and career services to mental health resources and community-building initiatives.”

TVC evaluated applicants on a variety of criteria that highlight the various education and ancillary services offered by an institution and contribute greatly to the overall success of veteran students and their families.

“The Gold Award acknowledges not only our growth in these areas but also our dedication to continuously improving the quality and breadth of support available,” Chavez said. “This recognition is a testament to the collaborative efforts across the university to create a comprehensive and supportive experience for those who have served our country.” ‘

On Aug. 27, TVC personnel will visit campus and interact with Bearkat students personally through an informational event that includes a lunch followed by fun activities, including a raffle with prizes for attendees. This is one of multiple events the center is hosting this fall. Other guests visiting campus include representatives from the Wounded Warrior Project and Student Account Services.
