Sam Houston State University will give prospective Bearkats and their families an in-depth look at the university’s elite educational experience through its informative Saturday@SAM event this weekend. This showcase offers tours, open houses and access to faculty and staff members so visitors can get answers to all of college life’s burning questions.

“The whole goal is to make the students feel like they’re at home and give them a great first experience, so they know they belong at Sam,” said Dana LeNorman, SHSU’s associate director of Visitor Services. “This is the one time per semester they can get all of that information centralized to one location in the middle of campus.”

New additions to the fall event include a shuttle service to the north side of campus for residence hall tours as well as an on-site application lab, allowing future Bearkats to apply on the day of their visit.

Various organizations and student services will set up booths at the heart of campus in Frank Parker Plaza on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. to meet with students and their families face-to-face and answer questions. During this time, visitors can also explore several open house events or participate in walking tours.

The tours, which are offered in both English and Spanish, begin at 10:30 a.m. near the Blatchley Bell Tower (located beside Parker Plaza) and will depart every 15 minutes until 1:15 p.m. Early birds may also opt to tour the campus before the day’s main events commence between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m.

“They will really get to come in and experience every part of Sam Houston,” LeNorman said.

There will be feature presentations, both in English and Spanish, covering the admissions process and financial aid from 8:45 until 9:25 a.m. The English presentation will take place in Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum while the Spanish presentation will happen in room 120 of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences building.

Future students may also explore specific majors and degree programs by meeting with academic leaders in SHSU’s various colleges, which will hold open houses and informational sessions from 9:45 to 11:20 a.m.

“We will have someone available to guide them all day, but also allow freedom in the schedule to build what they would like to do,” LeNorman said.

Visitors can build their personal itineraries by viewing this fall’s Saturday@SAM program and registering for the event on the Saturday@Sam webpage.

Check-in opens outside of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences building at 7:15 a.m. and ends at 9:15 a.m. Late check-in will be available to assist visitors who arrive later in the day due to long distance travel. The Ols Main Market dining hall will be open along with the Lowman Student Center, including many of its restaurants and the University Bookstore.
