The Sam Houston State University College of Arts and Media (CAM) has announced the lineup of CAM Artist Series events for the 2024-2025 academic year. This year’s series features events from each of the college’s departments. The CAM Artist Series events are designed to showcase the best of the creative, active and meaningful artistic expressions that students, faculty and staff wholeheartedly dedicate their time and passion towards.
2024-25 CAM Artist Series Lineup:
CAM Artist Series | Murray Smither Collection: A Life in Art
Department of Art
Nov. 9 | Reception | 3 p.m.
Oct. 14 – Nov. 26 | Exhibition | Mon. – Fri. 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Sat. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
University Art Gallery, Dana G. Hoyt Fine Arts Building
Join the College of Arts and Media and the Department of Art as they celebrate "A Life in Art," the remarkable legacy of Murray Smither, at a special reception and gallery talk. Smither spent his life exhibiting, supporting and collecting work by artists who had unique visions that they passionately expressed. He was attracted to art outside of the mainstream and recognized what others often overlooked by bringing many unknown artists to the world’s attention. His collection includes historical early works of Texas art, works from the 1970s and 80s by prominent Texas artists, visionary outsider art, folk art, prison art and works by internationally recognized American artists. The exhibition includes a sample of the diverse collection of art that Smither chose to include in his everyday life.
CAM Artist Series | Imogen Says Nothing by Aditi Brennan Kapil
Department of Theatre & Musical Theatre
Nov. 20 – 23 | 7:30 p.m.
Nov. 23 – 24 | Matinee | 2:00 p.m.
Showcase Theatre, University Theatre Center
“Imogen Says Nothing” is a revisionist comedy in verse and prose featuring Imogen, a character who only appears in the first folio of William Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing,” speaks no lines, and is probably a typo. This feminist hijacking of Shakespeare investigates the voices that have been absented from our canon, and the consequences of cutting them.
CAM Artist Series | Holiday Concert
School of Music
Dec. 5 – 6| 7:30 p.m.
Payne Concert Hall, Gaertner Performing Arts Center
The College of Arts and Media invites the Bearkat community to enjoy the annual Holiday Concert, featuring the symphony orchestra, choirs and various other ensembles performing festive holiday favorites.
CAM Artist Series | TRIUMPH, TRIUMPH, VICTORIA!
School of Music
April 26 | 7:30 p.m.
Recital Hall, Gaertner Performing Arts Center
The College of Arts and Media welcomes Harmonia Stellarum Houston to perform polychoral music for voices, cornettos and sackbuts by Heinrich Schütz and contemporaries.
CAM Artist Series | Heatwave Media & Film Festival 2025
Department of Mass Communication
April 28 – May 1
Entering its sixth year, this juried media and film festival showcases creative talent in the areas of film, PR, advertising, journalism, emerging media and broadcast production. The festival is open to SHSU students, with additional categories for Texas college and high school students, as well as independent filmmakers from Texas and beyond.
CAM Artist Series | Dance Spectrum in Concert
Department of Dance
May 1 – 3 | 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Dance Theater, Gaertner Performing Arts Center
Dance Spectrum in Concert is an evening of dance choreographed by dance faculty and guest artists and provides dance majors with an opportunity to hone their craft by working on challenging repertory in an atmosphere that is professional in nature.
