The College of Osteopathic Medicine at Sam Houston State University (SHSU-COM) will host its fourth annual research day on Nov. 1, bringing together student doctors, faculty and medical professionals for a day of innovation and academic achievement. This year’s event will showcase research by SHSU-COM’s student doctors, featuring poster and podium presentations on a variety of topics across four areas of research: biomedical sciences, clinical medicine/community health, medical education and osteopathic manipulative medicine.
The event will begin with a keynote address by Dr. Mark Hornstein, professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School. An authority in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, Dr. Hornstein, will present on Lifestyle and IVF Outcomes during his speech.
Events such as the annual research day highlight how SHSU-COM delivers a curriculum that integrates instruction of the scientific method to promote critical thinking, a scholarly approach to practice and lifelong learning.
The College of Osteopathic Medicine provides a state-of-the-art research facility, where faculty investigators mentor student doctors through hands-on involvement in research projects. SHSU-COM also offers robust support, including funding for scholarship development and opportunities to present findings at professional meetings and events like the college’s annual research day, ensuring that student doctors gain invaluable experience sharing their research with peers and professionals alike.
The central focus of SHSU-COM’s annual research day is the work of the college’s student doctors with their faculty mentors and preceptors. This year, 79 student doctors will present their research across two poster sessions and one podium session from one of the four main areas of research, covering a wide range of topics such as Therapeutic Benefits of Magnesium in Patients with Long-COVID, Patient Satisfaction in Obstetric and Gynecologic Care and The Impact of Domestic Violence on Hypertension and Cardiovascular Risk in Female Survivors.
Student doctors currently in their clinical clerkship rotations across Texas will also be presenting virtually. These presentations highlight the valuable role preceptors play in guiding students’ practical and research-based learning. This special day also celebrates the hard work and dedication of the student doctors and offers a glimpse into the future of compassionate medical care for rural communities in East Texas, where SHSU-COM focuses on preparing primary care doctors to serve.
The Research Day schedule is as follows:
- 12:30 – 1:15 p.m.: Keynote Address by Dr. Mark Hornstein
- 1:30 – 2:25 p.m.: Poster Presentations, Group 1
- 2:30 – 3:25 p.m.: Poster Presentations, Group 2
- 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.: Podium Presentations
- 4:30 p.m.: Awards and Recognition
In recognition of outstanding student work, awards will be presented for the top posters across each category and the top three podium presentations.
The success of these research projects is made possible by the dedicated support of SHSU-COM’s faculty, staff and preceptors. Their guidance and mentorship have been instrumental in shaping the research experiences of student doctors, providing them with critical feedback and resources to advance their studies and knowledge.
SHSU-COM invites the public to attend its annual research day on Friday, Nov. 1. The keynote address and student doctor presentations are free and open to the public. The College of Osteopathic Medicine is located in Conroe at 925 City Central Ave., with limited street parking nearby.
