Diane Ju, a third-year medical student at Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM), has been awarded the prestigious Sterling K. Welch Scholarship by the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF). This scholarship, established through a bequest from Sterling Welch, DO, recognizes medical students who excel academically, actively engage in extracurricular activities, demonstrate a commitment to osteopathic medicine and show financial need.
During her time at SHSU-COM, Ju has made a meaningful impact through leadership and service.
"I had the opportunity to serve as the vice president of community outreach for SHAPE (Sexual Health and Prevention Education), where I organized events that raised awareness among future physicians about domestic abuse and provided preventative health education for at-risk youth," she said. "These experiences reinforced my desire to integrate empathy and patient education into my medical practice. I also improved my communication skills and ability to address difficult topics, which I plan to use to build trust and provide compassionate, informative care."
Currently completing her clinical rotations, Ju has found her passion for anesthesiology. She was drawn to the specialty by the impact that anesthesiologists can have on patients’ mental well-being before and following a procedure.
"Surgery can be daunting, and I believe helping patients feel informed and cared for is essential in alleviating their anxiety. I am also drawn to the unique role anesthesiologists play as the last face a patient sees before anesthesia, carrying the responsibility of providing comfort and warmth,“ Ju said. “I aspire to become a physician who ensures patients feel supported and safe during critical moments."
