Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SHSU-COM) is pleased to announce an exciting partnership with China Medical University College of Chinese Medicine (CMU-CCM) in Taichung, Taiwan. This collaboration will provide meaningful opportunities for student and faculty education and hands-on training. Together, SHSU-COM and CMU-CCM will develop educational programs and activities, engage in innovative research and facilitate faculty and student exchanges aimed at expanding perspectives and enhancing learning in both osteopathic and Chinese medicine.

As Taiwan’s first institution to establish undergraduate and graduate programs in Chinese medicine, CMU is recognized as a leader in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and integrative health. Over the past 65 years, it has trained more than 10,000 TCM physicians, some of whom have completed a double major in both TCM and Western medicine. CMU’s College of Chinese Medicine offers Taiwan’s only Graduate Institute of Acupuncture Science and is internationally active, contributing to publications by the World Health Organization, as well as U.S. and European pharmacopeias, to advance standards in TCM.

In October, Thomas Mohr, DO, dean of SHSU-COM, traveled to Taiwan to meet with the gracious hosts at China Medical University as he worked on the logistics of the partnership. During his visit, Mohr participated in a collaboration ceremony, where both institutions celebrated their shared commitment to advancing medical education. He toured the Lifu Museum of Chinese Medicine and delivered a special lecture on osteopathic medicine in the United States. Additionally, Mohr visited the Department of Chinese Medicine at China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) and met with CMU President Mien-Chie Hung.

COMTaiwanTripSocial.jpg“This partnership represents a meaningful step forward in bridging Eastern and Western approaches to medicine. By combining CMU’s strengths in TCM with SHSU-COM’s expertise in osteopathic principles, we are creating unique educational opportunities for our students and expanding the possibilities for integrative patient care,” CMU-CCM Dean Hung-Rong Yen, MD, PhD, said.

This effort is a natural fit with SHSU-COM’s osteopathic manipulative medicine curriculum, as it integrates the college’s osteopathic expertise with CMU-CCM’s knowledge in TCM to training for student doctors and fosters a holistic approach to patient care. As one of the first collaborations of its kind in the United States, SHSU-COM is honored to work with CMU-CCM.

“Our partnership with China Medical University in Taiwan is a unique chance for our students and faculty to gain insights from one of Asia’s leading institutions in integrative medicine,” Mohr said. “By bringing together the strengths of osteopathic and Chinese medical practices, we’re offering our students and faculty an enriched experience to explore holistic approaches to patient care while expanding research capabilities to address pressing health issues in innovative ways.”
