Sam Houston State University has announced that Michael T. Stephenson, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, has accepted a position with the University of Tampa and will depart SHSU June 1.
Since joining SHSU in 2021, Stephenson has played a pivotal role in advancing academic initiatives and strengthening the university’s commitment to student success. His many achievements include establishing the institution’s First-Generation Center; supporting research; creating the BRIDGE program (Building Research, Innovation, Discovery and Growing Engagement) to foster interdisciplinary collaborations; and establishing the Student Success Operations Committee, an interdivisional group of leaders from Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and Enrollment Success.
“Dr. Stephenson’s commitment to excellence and innovation has strengthened our institution and helped shape its future,” said SHSU President Alisa White. “I’m grateful for his tremendous contributions and wish him the best as he embarks on this new opportunity.”
Dr. Chad Hargrave, vice president for research and strategic partnerships and chief research officer, will serve as interim provost, effective June 1. The University will begin a national search for a new provost in a few days.
