The Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (SHSU-COM) chapter of the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) has been awarded a $500 SOMA Foundation Osteopathic Medical Education (OMED) grant during the Fall 2024 House of Delegates Meeting. This grant recognizes chapters addressing significant community needs through innovative public health or preventative medicine projects.
Student doctor Nidhi Vedire, a second-year medical student at SHSU-COM, submitted the application that successfully secured funding for the chapter's initiative.
"This was my first time writing a grant proposal, and it felt like a natural extension of the work I’ve been passionate about for years," Vedire said. "Having the opportunity to bring this initiative to our community, and to collaborate with fellow students is incredibly rewarding. I’m excited to see the impact we can make together."
SHSU-COM’s SOMA chapter will also be contributing $1,000 to the chapter’s efforts to provide healthcare information and resources to local communities in need.
Vedire’s dedication and initiative reflect SHSU-COM’s supportive environment for fostering student leadership and professional growth.
“Receiving the SOMA Foundation OMED Grant is an honor and a testament to our students’ hard work and determination,” said Thomas Mohr, D.O., dean of SHSU-COM. “This recognition underscores the college’s commitment to empowering our student doctors to excel academically and professionally while positively impacting the communities they serve.”
In addition to the grant recognition, SHSU-COM’s SOMA delegation participated in professional development workshops, speaker sessions and policy discussions that will shape the future of osteopathic medicine.
