Scholarship Awards

The Undergraduate Research Symposium endeavors to continually reward the students who participate by offering scholarships to the winners. The scholarships are awarded based on visual representation, quality of research, and presentation skills.  

The URS currently offers three $500 scholarship awards. Winners are announced at the URS closing ceremony. 

The Assam Scholarships for Honors Research Award*

The Assam Scholarship is named after Assam, Dr. Hiranya Nath’s home state in India. Assam is a beautiful place with its own history, culture, and language. This region holds enormous potential for economic growth and is rich in natural resources with a pool of highly talented professionals, well-groomed in modern science and technology. Assam is also the eastern corridor to Southeast Asia. The Assam Scholarships were created to increase name recognition for Assam among Sam Houston State students who may become interested in or may generate interest among others in that part of emerging India from a global business perspective.

Dr. Nath is an Associate Professor of Economics at Sam Houston State University. He earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Art at the University of Delhi, India. He earned his Master of Philosophy at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi, India. Dr. Nath attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where he earned a Master of Art and a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics. His research interests include monetary economics, information economy, and development economics.

The Ambassador Choice Award

The Honors College awards this to the student whose research stood out the most to the Elliott T. Bowers Honors College Ambassadors. The Honors College Ambassadors are a distinguished group of students who annually host SHSU's Undergraduate Research Symposium. The recipient of this award is hand selected based on their academic research and presentation skills.   

The Honors College Award for Best Overall Poster Presentation

The Honors College awards this to the student with the best poster presentation. The posters are judged on the quality of research, presentation of student(s), and physical appearance.

The Honors College Award for Best Overall Oral-Media-Panel Presentation

The Honors College awards this to the student with the best oral-media presentation. For this award, students are judged on their professional presentation skills, quality of research, and presentation aids.

Other Awards

The Honors College Award for Most Outstanding Senior*

The Honors College awards this to the most outstanding graduating senior with the best poster or oral-media presentation. This award is based on the same criteria as the Best Overall awards and can be awarded to either a poster presentation or an oral-media presentation.

*To be considered for this award, you must be graduating in either the current spring or upcoming summer semester.
