String Studies Auditions

Note: Due to uncertainties regarding COVID-19, video recordings are required to be submitted with your School of Music application for all auditions occurring in 2020-2021. Recorded videos of all audition repertoire are to be uploaded at the time the School of Music application is submitted. Each selection should be recorded individually, including scales, and must be recorded in one take. Edits within the performance are not permitted. Please contact the applied instructor/area coordinator for any questions regarding repertoire and/or recordings.


Undergraduate Audition Requirements

Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass

Memorization is required for music performance majors. For all other majors, memorization is optional. Performance Majors will prepare a movement from a standard concerto with cadenza (if applicable), and a contrasting piece or movement from a sonata or concerto. In addition, applicants should be prepared to play any three-octave scale of the committee's choosing, major or minor (melodic mode). Other Majors (Music Education, Music Therapy, Bachelor of Arts, Composition) will prepare one three-octave scale and two arpeggios (minor arpeggio and major arpeggio), and two contrasting pieces or movements from a sonata or concerto.

Harp

Applicants will prepare two contrasting pieces or movements from a sonata or concerto, and one orchestral excerpt from the standard literature. Performance majors must play at least one of the pieces or movements from memory.


Graduate Audition Requirements

Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass

Prepare the first movement of a romantic concerto with cadenza (if applicable), and two movements of an unaccompanied partita or sonata by J. S. Bach (from memory).

Harp

Prepare two contrasting works. Performance majors must play these from memory. Also prepare three orchestral excerpts from the standard literature.
