Acting and Directing

The Department of Theatre and Musical Theatre BFA programs develop outstanding theatre artists with the professional skills, intellectual vigor, and creative resources necessary to excel and thrive in the performing arts of the 21st century.

Our program also includes intensive study of the special techniques of acting for film and television and practical study and preparation for auditioning for the commercial theatre, musical theatre, cinema, and television.

The acting component of this emphasis develops students' innate talent through numerous rigorous classes in acting, vocal production and movement for stage, film and television across a myriad of genres and styles. Our program also includes intensive study and practical preparation for the business side of this art form including auditioning for the commercial theatre, musical theatre, film and television.

Our department has professional internship programs established with Theatre Under the Stars, Stages Repertory Theatre, Classical Theatre Company and Texas Repertory Theatre in Houston. Qualified student actors are exposed to the professional world of theatre while continuing their studies through our department.

The directing component of this emphasis prepares young directors through extensive preparation of scenes and eventually student-directed productions. Detailed study of the directing process is emphasized through script analysis, communication skills, creating ground plans and scene study in a wide variety of theatrical styles and genres.
