What is sustainability?

UN World Commission on Environment and Development: “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Sustainability is based on a simple principle: Everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. To pursue sustainability is to create and maintain the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony to support present and future generations. 

How does it apply to SHSU?

Sam Houston State University is committed to promoting an ecologically-friendly campus while reducing its carbon footprint on the world. In everything we do, from the campus surroundings to academics to the daily operation of buildings and facilities, we are continually taking steps to make SHSU more sustainable. Our mission is to motivate, facilitate, and coordinate change through campus-wide partnerships and projects to create a culture of sustainability at SHSU.
