About Us
Started in 2017 with our first event at Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA, the first Democracy Day brought together scholars, activists, and concerned citizens to discuss in an open and inclusive forum ways to stop the decline of representative government and now we are continuing this important work at Sam.
Renamed Democracy Day - Empowering Action, chief organizer, Dr. Christopher M. Toula, Department of Mass Communication (ctoula@shsu.edu), and the organizing committee are developing projects to bring together our community to inform and empower our participants. Around the world, democracy is under threat. A recent study from Cambridge University found that American “satisfaction with our democracy” had fallen from 75% in 1995 to below 50% today. Similar results are found throughout the developed and developing world, in old and new democracies. The causes of this decline are varied, rising inequality, demographic change, globalization, and the rise of new media forms all play a role.
