Virtual Critical Thinking through Deliberative Dialogue

Students eligible: All graduate and undergraduate students enrolled at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) in the spring 2021 semester who have read the book. Participants must attend the entire event to be eligible for the Critical Thinking through Deliberative Dialogue (CT-DD) scholarship.

Faculty, staff, and administration eligible: SHSU employees (faculty, admin, and staff) may compete as well. Participating employees will be randomly assigned to student teams. Participants must attend the entire event to be eligible for first and second place CT-DD prizes.

Please fill out the application at the link below by midnight on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 to compete in the Spring 2021 American Like Me: Critical Thinking through Deliberative Dialogues (CT thru DD) event.

The CT thru DD event will be conducted on April 22, 2021 using ZOOM from 4:00 – 6:30 PM. Participants must attend the entire event.

Groups will use their critical thinking and deliberative dialogue skills to:

  • evaluate information relating to a problem/question deriving from the common reader
construct a plan to action based on available information and stakeholder input (plans to action are not necessarily about fixing a problem. They could be designed for greater understanding as well).

  • Groups will be created by the host of the event. Groups will largely consist of students, but admin/faculty/staff may participate as well. Group work will be submitted at the end of the event and be evaluated by a panel of campus judges. Submitted work will be evaluated on the group’s ability to assess information and create a path to action based on facts/information, context, hidden assumptions, and common values.

Prizes will be adjusted based on peer evaluations. We will strive to have at least one employee (staff, faculty, or admin) at each table with four students. One of the participants will operate as moderator.

Space is limited, so be sure to complete the application at your earliest convenience. Submitting an application may not guarantee admittance. Students who have attended Deliberative Dialogue Moderator training will be prioritized. An email registration confirmation/invitation will be sent to applicants by the end of the day, Monday, April 19, 2021.

Prizes:
First Place Team:       Up to $250 scholarship per team member.
